Coats was founded in 1947 by Gil Coats. He designed a wheel holder for changer tractor tires. He later teamed with Jack Hennessy and together, they redefined the design for the tire changer. Coats is owned by Hennessy Industries, who also own/make the Ammco brake lathes and Ammco lifts. Today, Hennessy Industries is the largest wheel service equipment manufacturer in North America.
